Threat of a new fine against the Nya Raketskolan in Kiruna

World news

The municipality of Kiruna risks having to pay a fine of a total of SEK 1.2 million if it does not succeed in addressing the major and serious deficiencies at the New Rocket School. Most recently, it is the school’s upper secondary that receives harsh criticism.

Missing grades in several subjects

According to the School Inspectorate, the school’s upper secondary students have missed out on lessons in music and Spanish due to a teacher shortage, and students in need have not received good special support. The authority states that around 60 students lacked grades in at least four subjects in the autumn semester 2022.

Furthermore, unlicensed teachers have been made responsible for grading, which is not allowed.

Criticism sharpens

Already a year ago, the school’s upper level was criticized, and now the School Inspectorate tightens the tone with a fine of SEK 600,000. Similar criticism and the same sum of fines apply to the school’s middle school, while the primary section must show improvements, but without the threat of fines.

The School Inspectorate wants the municipality’s reports on 29 September for middle school and for upper school on 31 October.

Can be banned from running the school

The school inspectorate points out that if the municipality of Kiruna does not overcome the problems, the consequence could be a ban on continuing to run the school, or alternatively the state temporarily taking over responsibility for the school.

The new Raketskolan drew attention last fall, when the teacher shortage led to a protective shutdown and the school being closed for a few days.
