At least three migrants traveling in a caravan died and one more was injured, after being run over this Saturday by a tractor-trailer when they were walking on the Pan-American Highway, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, OaxacaSouth of Mexico.
The migrants, whose nationality is still unknown, were advancing on the La Ventosa-La Venta section, in the eastern part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepecand they had left since Tapachula, Chiapaswhere they entered from Guatemala.
The bodies were left on the federal highway while the municipal police of La Ventosa and La Venta, belonging to the municipality of Juchitán, cordoned off the area, and searched the bushes for more injuries.
Meanwhile, the migrant who survived was transferred to the Juchitán hospital, Oaxaca.
According to police reports, the trailer tried to avoid a group of migrants, but in the maneuver it ran over the four foreigners who were walking on the shoulder.
Migrant groups in Mexico
In the last three years, numerous groups of migrants advance from Tapachula to Juchitán, trying to reach the capital of the state of Oaxaca to board buses to the City of Mexico and from there continue to the northern border.
However, in the stretch of almost 400 kilometers, migrants risk their lives walking near where hundreds of tractor-trailers transport construction material and pipes loaded with flammable material.
Now, a group of almost 800 migrants advances walking on the coastal highway towards Puerto Escondido, with the aim of reaching the city of Oaxaca.
The facts occur after the International Organization for Migration (IOM) declared last September the border between Mexico and the United States as “the most dangerous land migratory route in the world”, with more than 686 migrants dead or missing in 2022.
Mexico reported an increase of nearly 77% in irregular migration in 2023, with more than 782,000 undocumented foreigners detected. EFE
