Prague – František Kupka’s oil Conception/Danae (Početí) will be auctioned in Prague today with a starting price of 85 million crowns without a ten percent auction markup. If the painting is sold for this price, it will become the most expensive painting by the author auctioned in the Czech Republic. The championship is still held by his Divertimento II, which was auctioned in 2020 for 75.2 million crowns without the auction surcharge. The Czech auction house record is held by Bohumil Kubišta’s Old Prague motif from 1911, which was sold in 2022 for 123.6 million crowns. At that time, it surpassed Kupkov’s Divertimento II.

The Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery auction, which will take place at 16:00 in Pavilion Expo 58, will also offer other works for which bidders will have to pay millions. The auction will include a collection of seven oils by Josef Šíma with starting prices ranging from approximately one to six million crowns, as well as canvases by Václav Boštík, Jan Zrzavý, Emil Filla and a Toyen collage. Another work by Kupko, a colored gouache on paper called Abstract Composition, will go for auction with a starting price of 1.35 million crowns.

Kupka’s oil Danae was created around 1930 and belongs to the so-called machinisms, paintings in which Kupka was inspired by the machines and technical achievements of the time. In the machinist abstract work Conception, Kupka encoded a story from Greek mythology in which Zeus transforms into golden rain to reach Danae, the hidden daughter of the Argive king Akrisius.

Kupko’s canvases are also in demand abroad, in 2021 his Jetting II (Le Jaillissement II) was auctioned at the London auction house Sotheby’s for around 231 million crowns.
