Two world records at the Diamond League athletics meeting in Paris

KENYA’S Faith Kipyegon broke the 5000m world record on Friday at the Diamond League meeting in Paris, a week after she also broke the 1500m record. The new world best time was also set by the Ethiopian Olympic runner-up Lamecha Girma in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Kipyegon ran 14:05.20 minutes and broke the previous record of Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey (14:06.62 from 2020), who was second in Paris (14:07.94). The Kenyan achieved the real feat of breaking two world records in two different disciplines in one week, after running 3:49.11 minutes in the 1500 meters last Friday in Florence.

Girma broke the world record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running the section in Paris in 7:52.12 minutes. He thus improved the time of the Qatari Saif Saaeed Shaheen (7:53.63), who has held the world record since 2004.
