The greater Ukraine’s military successes, the stronger its position at the negotiating table will be, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference at NATO headquarters.
The Norwegian pointed out that the ongoing Ukrainian counter-offensive, which aims to liberate areas occupied by Russian forces, is still in its early stages.
“We don’t know if this will be a turning point in the war (…). The more Ukraine gains, the stronger its position at the negotiating table will be.
– emphasized Stoltenberg on the eve of the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.
The secretary general expressed his confidence that the leaders of NATO countries, who will gather at the Vilnius summit on July 11-12, will make it clear that the future of Ukraine lies in the Alliance.
Stoltenberg added that after the war it was necessary to ensure that Ukraine had credible security guarantees so that the history of Russian aggression would not be repeated. As he stressed, “individual allies are discussing various types of arrangements, a security framework for Ukraine.”
The secretary general expressed the hope that the defense ministers who will be meeting in Brussels from Thursday will agree to the establishment of a new NATO center for the security of critical underwater infrastructure.
He also pointed out that NATO needs to do more to standardize ammunition and equipment.
“Since last fall, we have been working on how to speed up defense production (…). Standardization is a fundamental responsibility of NATO (…). We need to do more to standardize ammunition.”
