Russian forces are preparing a provocation at the occupied Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine, Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) warned on Friday. The aim of the operation is to stop the Ukrainian counter-offensive, it added.
Russian forces are preparing a large provocation in the coming hours, imitating a power plant failure, HUR wrote in a statement.
As it was added, for this purpose, a strike will be carried out directly on the territory of the power plant. Then the occupiers are to announce an emergency leak of radioactive substances. Responsibility for these actions will be shifted to Ukraine, says HUR.
To cover up their activities, the Russians prevented the rotation of personnel of the International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring mission scheduled for Friday, according to HUR.
According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the purpose of this operation is to provoke the international community to carry out a thorough investigation, during which all combat activities would be suspended.
The Russians hope that in this way they would be able to gain the desired pause in operations, which they would use to regroup the occupying contingent and stop the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the interview concluded.
The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been occupied since early March last year. Russian soldiers are stationed on its premises, and employees of the Russian state-owned company Rosatom are also present there. In recent months, the invading army has repeatedly shelled the power plant area, thus creating, in the opinion of the authorities in Kiev, a radiation threat with unpredictable consequences.
