Ukrainians attacked “Gateway to Crimea” with Storm Shadow missiles, a vital Russian bridge connecting Crimea with Kherson

World news

Ukrainian forces bombed, in a missile attack, the Cionhar/Ciongar bridge, strategic for the Russian army, which connects the Crimean peninsula and the Ukrainian province of Kherson, inform the Russian administration officials in the two regions under Moscow’s control. According to the Russian governor of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, the bridge was attacked by Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of more than 250 kilometers, recently delivered by Britain to Ukraine. Road traffic was diverted and no casualties were reported.

Known as the “gateway to Crimea”, the Ciongar bridge is one of several that connect Crimea – annexed by Russia in 2014 – to the mainland. The bridges offer an alternative for connecting the isthmus of the peninsula, a narrow strip of land, to the continent, informs Agerpres.

The Storm Shadow missiles have a range of “more than 250 kilometers”, according to the manufacturer MBDA, far more than the 80-90 kilometers of the Himars missile launchers, which are used intensively by the Ukrainian forces, informs The Guardian. The missile is jointly developed by Great Britain and France and is, as a rule, launched from the air.

According to the manufacturer MBDA, the missile is designed for attacks against difficult targets such as bunkers and key infrastructure

Britain last month confirmed the delivery of Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles, which will allow the Ukrainian military to hit ammunition depots, Russian troop concentrations or fuel depots far behind the front line.

“They are long-range, conventional and precision missiles,” said British Defense Minister Ben Wallace. “We will not simply stand aside while Russia kills civilians”, he explained the decision of the government in London.

Storm Shadow missiles are currently the western weapons with the longest range in the arsenal of the Ukrainian army.

In October 2022, the Kerch Bridge – which connects Crimea to mainland Russia – was also blown up by Ukrainian forces, but in this case it was a kamikaze naval drone attack.
