Tricks to clean the drain

One of the tricks is to use an old hanger on which you normally keep your clothes. Straighten it as much as you can, and when you have a somewhat straight line, bend it at one end so that you get something like a hook. Then push that end into the clogged drain and start ‘fishing’. You won’t believe what can be extracted this way, from hair to some slightly slimy accumulations. After you conclude that you have removed enough, wash the drain (and save it for another time) and run hot water down the drain.

If the blockage is not too terrible, only hot water can help. Heat the water to boiling and slowly pour it into the drain. Repeat this two to three times with a gap of a few seconds. This method often helps, especially if the drain is clogged due to accumulated fat deposits.

Do you have a vacuum cleaner? for dry and wet vacuuming, and it will save you from the accumulation of dirty water in the sink, bathtub or sink. Set it to the wet vacuum option and make a kind of ring that will prevent the pressure from being lost through the gaps.

You can do this, for example, from a piece of rubber. Put that ring on the drain, press the suction pipe on it and turn it on at the strongest setting. Whether or not this trick will work depends on how much and how clogged the drain is, but it’s worth a try.

Soda, salt and vinegar helped

  • Baking soda and salt Mix half a cup of table salt and half a cup of baking soda. Pour this mixture into the clogged drain, leave it for 10 to 20 minutes, then pour in hot water. Salt, baking soda and hot water will produce a chemical reaction that should solve the problem.
  • Baking soda and vinegar All you need for this cool trick is baking soda and vinegar. First, put a few tablespoons of soda in the drain, and then pour some vinegar. You will immediately see the reaction. Finally, rinse with warm water. Some people advise to leave the baking soda and vinegar in the drain for about an hour or even overnight after foaming.

What if none of the above helps?

In that case, turn into a plumber, but don’t panic, it’s a simple procedure that anyone can do. Remove the siphon (bent pipe located under the sink or sink), but first place a basin under it, as some water will leak out. Then inspect the siphon and clean it of accumulations and put it back in place.

If you see that the siphon is passable, then the problem probably lies in the pipes. Something flexible will help you here, so you can push the pipe a little.

Advice: It is a good idea to put special nets on the drains of sinks, washbasins, bathtubs and shower cabins that do not allow hairs to enter the drain. It costs a few euros and can make your life a lot easier.
