In a tweet published on May 19, 2023, Johnny Marr said, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer.” His message said, “Those who knew Andy will remember him as a beautiful soul, and music fans will remember him as a supremely accomplished performer.

Andy had been fighting pancreatic cancer for a long time, but no one knew how long.

He played with the Smiths from 1982 until 1987, when they broke up. Andy often played with Morrissey on his projects after the Smiths broke up. He also worked with Sinéad O’Connor, the Pretenders, and Badly Drawn Boy.
