Two people died after a plane crashed near the Tupelo airport in the US state of Mississippi today, local officials said.

Tupelo Fire Department Sergeant Michael Moody confirmed to CBS News that two people were killed.

It is not yet known what type of plane crashed and how many people were on board, and more information will be released later in the evening, Moody added.

An eyewitness to the crash told WCBI that he and his wife were in a car on a nearby road when he saw the plane in trouble and then saw smoke.

Regional Tupelo Airport is more than 65 years old and is a transportation aviation hub in North Mississippi.

About 38,000 people live in Tupelo, it is located 300 kilometers from the capital of Mississippi, Jackson.
