War in Ukraine: the IAEA denies the rumors and assures that the water from the dam cools the reactors of the nuclear power plant

The water level, “below the critical threshold of 12.7 meters”, is no longer sufficient to supply “the basins of the Zaporijjia nuclear power plant” for cooling operations, explained the boss of the Ukrainian operator , Ukrhydroenergo Igor Syrota.

After examination, it turned out that the pumping operation “should be able to continue even if the level fell below the threshold of 12.7 meters”, replied the UN body in a press release.

Earlier this week, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said a large cooling pond near the site is “currently full and contains enough reserves to power the plant for several months, as its six reactors are on hold”.

Verifications are underway but “it is vital that this basin remains intact”, he said. “Nothing should be done to undermine its integrity,” however, warned Rafael Grossi during a meeting of the agency’s Board of Governors in Vienna.

Plant staff have already introduced measures to restrict water consumption, using it only for “essential nuclear safety-related activities”, he also said.
