About 200,000 people with asthma live in Croatia, half of whom have difficulty maintaining control over their condition, and 12,000 new cases are recorded annually in the country, highlighted on Saturday on the occasion of World Asthma Day.
– In Croatia alone, it is estimated that around 200 thousand people live with asthma, and half of them have difficulty maintaining control over their condition. Annually, 12 thousand new cases of asthma are recorded in Croatia, which highlights the urgent need for comprehensive management strategies – warned the Croatian Thoracic Society, the Croatian Breathing House Foundation and the Patient Association ‘Breath of Life’.

As part of the celebration of World Asthma Day, they will conduct public health campaigns and educational programs throughout Croatia, the aim of which is to raise awareness about asthma and promote lung health, with a special emphasis on children.
The campaign started on May 4 with public health events in Gajeva Street in Zagreb and in the Atrium of Cedulin Palace in Zadar. The slogan of the campaign is ‘With love, without smoke – for a healthy family for everyone’.
At the global level, there are about 260 million people suffering from asthma and about 450 thousand deaths per year.
In response to this health problem, the Croatian Pulmonary Society, in cooperation with the Croatian Thoracic Society, created last year guidelines for the treatment of asthma that are aligned with the strategy of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). They emphasize the importance of achieving asthma control with minimal use of medication and reducing dependence on inhalers with short-acting beta2-agonists.
– Untoč As asthma is a lifelong condition with individual variations in symptoms, it can be successfully controlled with appropriate management. Simple blood tests can help identify specific subtypes of asthma, such as eosinophilic asthma, which affects almost 7 out of 10 patients with severe asthma – the campaign manager said in a press release.
With the application of personalized and precise therapeutic approaches, including biological therapies, guidelines for the treatment of asthma seek to improve outcomes and increase the quality of life of asthma patients, they added.
Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways, and its symptoms can be shortness of breath, cough and tightness in the chest. If left untreated, these symptoms can vary in intensity over time, leading to progressive limitation of airflow in the lungs.
