When the tulip is mentioned, everyone thinks of Holland. But somewhere! The original land of tulips is either China (that is, the Pamir Mountains) or Anatolia, which is located on the territory of today’s Turkey. The tulip is the national flower of Turkey. It was once cultivated in the Sultan’s gardens and did not reach Europe until the middle of the 16th century.
The then Austrian ambassador to Turkey sent bulbous plants to the court of Ferdinand I. Habsburg in Vienna, and they were immediately planted in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace. Then when they bloomed, they charmed everyone with their beauty…

The tulip used to be an investment
At the same time, tulip bulbs also reached the Dutch botanist Charles de L’Eclusi from Leiden, who bred tulips into beautiful cultivars. The Dutch liked the ornamental plant so much that in the 17th century a literal Tulip Fever broke out in Amsterdam, when tulip bulbs were sold as an investment.
Their price was extremely high. For example, in 1624, an onion of the Semper augustus variety cost 1,200 guilders. Twelve years later, it increased almost fourfold! For comparison, a bourgeois house at the time was worth 10,000 guilders.
After flowering, it is left in the ground
Today’s tulip prices are of course lower. And even a mere mortal can afford them, which is why they are the domain of Czech gardens and orchards. Once these colorful treasures have bloomed, leave them in the ground for a few more days.
The only thing you can do with the plant is to remove the dried flowers and stems. Leave the tulips in the ground until the leaves wilt and dry! This green part is important to them because it supplies the bulb with nutrients that it stores for next year.

Leaves as radar for excavation
A withered tulip is a sign that you can finally take the bulb out of the ground. The same scenario applies to other bulbs such as hyacinths or crocuses. Caution: Never use a spade or hoe when digging up the bulb, which could damage the “tulip bud”. Store bulbs in a dry and dark place. Check them regularly for mold or rot.
When is betting time
Bulbs will be a hot topic again in autumn, when they are planted in the ground again. Experts recommend planting from September to mid-October, so that the bulbs take root in the ground and have the strength to bloom again next year.
