When to cut the hedge
Regular trimming is extremely important for a hedge. It ensures the maintenance of the correct shape and at the same time supports the growth of new shoots, thanks to which it also thickens. Make the first cut right at the beginning of the growing season, i.e. right in the spring, when there is no longer a threat of ground frost.
Thanks to this, you will ensure the plant has a dense, even and healthy growth in the desired length and shape. Since the plant is not yet in full sap, the cut does not burden it in any way. On the contrary, it will quickly regenerate and regrow.
Shape and align
Roughly at the end of June, usually around the feast of St. John on June 24, a careful cut is made. It is used to even out any unevenness that was not yet evident in the spring. At this time, you should leave the hedge with about a third of the year’s shoots and enough new leaves to keep the plant well supplied with nutrients for the rest of the year.
Beware of the dry season
Although you can shape the hedge continuously throughout the growing season, cutting during the hot and dry summer months of July and August could seriously damage the plant. Another suitable period is autumn.
Start from the bottom
Always cut the hedge from the bottom up. Thanks to this, you will make your work much easier, because the cut parts will not get caught in the uncut areas. However, if your hedge is already grown and extremely tall, cut the top first. Only then go into the hips.
Wider at the bottom
The hedge should be widest at the bottom and gradually narrow towards the top. Thanks to this, the sun’s rays and the lower branches will fall and the fence will not be shaved in these places. Better stability is also a bonus, so the hedge can withstand many gusts of wind and even snow during the winter.
String is a great partner
If you want to have a clipped fence as if from a magazine, always mark the desired plane before editing. Not only on top, but also on the sides. For lower and shorter hedges, a bar or board can also be used for this purpose.
