Scientists from the US and South Korea have identified several genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2.

The study is published in bioRxiv.

The specialists analyzed single-stranded RNA sequences of viruses from 11,132 isolated patients with SARS-CoV-2.

They compared the genomes of coronaviruses in patients from around the world.

It turns out that there are four varieties among European and North American SARS-CoV-2 samples.

Two of them are mainly European. The third variety is characteristic of the USA. The fourth is a mix of infections in the US and Europe.

One of the predominant European branches of the coronavirus is directly related to viruses from China.

The latter is from the “original” viruses that entered the US and Europe from Asia. Another branch contains genomes from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
