The American sculptor Richard Serra has died at his home on Long Island in New York, his lawyer confirms. Serra was 85 years old.

Serra was best known for his giant sculptures in hot-rolled steel shaped into arches, spirals and ellipses. He also sculpted in other materials such as concrete, rubber and lead.

The minimalist Richard Serra, born in 1939, is considered one of the leading sculptors of his generation.

His work began to gain attention in 1981 when his 36.5 meter long and 3.6 meter high curved wall of steel, called “Tilted Arc†, was installed at the Federal Plaza in New York.

The sculpture aroused strong feelings and critics demanded that it be moved. It was later dismantled, but Serra’s popularity on the New York art scene was a fact.

In 2005, eight larger works by Serra were installed at the Guggenheim Museum in Spain.
