Editorial cartoons for June 18, 2023: Donald Trump charged in federal court

U.S. NEWS

It was a scene without precedent: a former president of the United States turning himself in to federal authorities to face charges brought by a grand jury. Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to “dozens of felony counts accusing him of hoarding classified documents and refusing government demands to give them back,” the Associated Press reported.

Editorial cartoonists latched onto the images contained in the indictment showing boxes and boxes of documents around Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, including in an ornate bathroom. Walt Handelsman leads the gallery with his image of Trump “boxed in” by the documents. Drew Sheneman draws Trump with boxes arrayed around him, saying “It’s not a secret if I tell everybody.” Bill Bramhall’s GOP elephant lounges in the bathroom amid the boxes, preferring virtual reality to reality.

Dana Summers sees a double standard, pointing to Democrats whose cases were handled differently. Steve Breen subtly highlights Trump’s outlier behavior by reproducing presidential signatures from George Washington to Joe Biden — with a fingerprint where Trump’s should go. Several cartoonists alluded to Republicans criticizing the Justice Department for pursuing the case.

Other news items in the cartoons include more fallout from the PGA Tour/LIV Golf merger; a Chinese listening post in Cuba; and wildfires making this a “Smokin’ USA” summer.

Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
