U.S. NEWS

Syracuse, N.Y. — It’s cut down day in the NFL as teams must trim rosters to 53 players by the league’s 4 p.m. deadline.

We’ll be tracking former Syracuse football players throughout the day.

It portends to be a tense day for linebacker Mikel Jones (LA Chargers), wide receiver Trishton Jackson (Minnesota Vikings), Kingsley Jonathan (Buffalo Bills) and other former Orange players.

Kicker Andre Szmyt was cut by the Chicago Bears earlier this month.

Defensive end Alton Robinson was released by the Seattle Seahawks last month.

Sean Tucker makes Buccaneers’ 53-man roster

Running back Sean Tucker has made Tampa Bay’s roster after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent.

Tucker’s career in the NFL was uncertain months ago after a heart condition kept him off the field. He could open the season as the team’s No. 2 tailback behind Rachaad White.

In a recent interview with ESPN, Tucker would not elaborate on the specifics of the heart condition that scratched him from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine and Syracuse University’s Pro Day.

“It was hard at first, just hearing everything,” Tucker told ESPN. “When I got the news … it came as a surprise. Hearing that, like the day before like my position group has the combine drills – it was definitely hard.”

Tommy DeVito waived by Giants

The former Syracuse quarterback was waived by the Giants Tuesday morning, according to a reports.

DeVito has impressed throughout the preseason but was stuck in an established QB hierarchy in New York behind starter Daniel Jones and longtime veteran Tyrod Taylor.

Still, DeVito showed enough to likely earn a spot on the Giants’ practice squad and serve as the team’s No. 3 quarterback.

He’ll have to clear waivers first, but there’s a strong chance he remains close to home and earns an NFL paycheck this fall.
