A veterinarian discovered five animals that he would never want to have as pets

A BRITISH vet known on TikTok as @ben.the.vet has revealed five animals he would never want to have as pets or would think twice before getting one.

The veterinarian explained that in his profession he encounters various animals, which gives him an insight into the advantages and disadvantages of certain pets. In a viral video, he explained why some of them aren’t for everyone. Here are the animals on his list.

Parrot

As the first disadvantage of the parrots, Ben cited the fact that he could never use mineral-coated non-stick pans again, because the gas produced when cooking on such pans can be fatal to parrots.

He added that parrots can be excellent pets, but that it is very difficult to provide them with enough space and mental stimulation because they are animals that would fly freely in the wild and explore rainforests.

Mouse

“Although they can live longer if they’re lucky or if you take good care of them, the average mouse lives one or two years,” Ben stated. Mice are great pets that you can easily bond with, but in his opinion, they live too short and parting with them is too painful.

Rabbit

Rabbits are one of the most common pets, but the veterinarian emphasizes that they are not for everyone because they need special care.

“Contrary to popular belief, rabbits are really not good pets for children. Rabbits are prey for other animals, which is why they are naturally very timid,” he explained. “They don’t always like to be held by people, and they are also very fragile.”

“They are also prone to stomach and dental problems, which can lead to unexpected veterinary costs,” he added.

Monkey

Monkeys are not common, but Ben states that there are 5,000 primates in the UK that people keep as pets. A few years ago, the veterinarian volunteered in Ecuador, where he often encountered monkeys that were orphaned after poachers killed their mothers in order to sell the cubs as pets.

In addition, monkeys are wild animals that have not been domesticated, and they are also very intelligent, which makes it difficult to provide them with enough mental stimulation.

Skunk

“Ferrets are cheeky and funny and fun, but you need to get used to them. They really stink and can bite you really bad if they get on your hand,” stated Ben. “They are very intelligent and need a lot of interaction and a lot of space. It’s really not for everyone.”
