North Korea conducted military exercises that simulated a nuclear counterattack on enemy targets, reports the Associated Press, citing state media. The simulation was personally supervised by Kim Jong Un.
On Monday (April 23), South Korea and Japan said North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the eastern seas from a region near the capital Pyongyang. After this, the Korean Central News Agency published a report admitting that military exercises had taken place. They were intended to be a “warning to enemies,” KCNA reported.

As reported by KCNA, the exercises included, among others: maneuvers of units as part of a nuclear counterattack and artillery fire with missiles equipped with training warheads simulating nuclear warheads. The agency also said the missile launches were the first demonstration of a nationwide nuclear weapons management system, called a “nuclear trigger.” These were also to be the first exercises using large-scale North Korean artillery.
Kim Jong Un “praised the height and precision of the launch” of the missiles, which were supposed to hit the designated target from a distance of 352 km. The report described the exercises as a “demonstration of North Korea’s nuclear forces” and multiple-strike capabilities amid escalating tensions with the United States and South Korea. Both countries were described as “war mongers”.

In early April, the North Korean leader paid an inspection visit to the Kim Jong-il University of Military and Political Affairs. During his speech, he emphasized that his country “must now be better prepared for war than ever before,” KCNA reports. Kim Jong Un also stated that “if the enemy decides to engage in a military confrontation with the DPRK, it will without hesitation deal a fatal blow to it by mobilizing all the resources at its disposal.”
