Prague – The new rules for unions of same-sex couples will be the most watched point of today’s Senate meeting. The upper parliamentary chamber is also supposed to approve the legal definition of what can be considered affordable rental housing. He also has a law on the agenda, according to which some debtors of contributions to public health insurance should get a chance to settle them more easily in the second half of this year.

Adoption of a new arrangement for the partnership of same-sex couples with most of the rights that a man and a woman have in marriage was supported by the Senate social and human rights committees without changes. The Constitutional-Legal Committee did not come to any recommendation. He did not agree either to accept the proposal or to extend it to marriage for all, as some of the members of the upper house are striving for. No one suggested rejecting the standard.

The amendment to the Civil Code is to be effective from next year, from when same-sex couples would also no longer be able to enter into the current registered partnership. According to the law, registrants do not currently have joint property, and after the loss of a partner, they are not entitled to a widow’s or widower’s pension, which the amendment aims to rectify. According to the amendment, the adoption of a child should only be possible if one of the partners is his biological parent. The adoption of an adopted child of one of the partners by the other should be possible only on the basis of a court decision.

The Senate will probably approve the legal definition of affordable rental housing. It was recommended to him by his committee for territorial development. The upper parliamentary chamber will decide on this on Wednesday as part of the amendment, which, according to the government, is intended to simplify support from the State Investment Support Fund and expand the range of areas in which it will be possible to use money from the fund. According to the amendment, tenants in affordable housing should generally have a lease for up to two years with the option of extending it for a fixed period. The available rent should initially not exceed 90 percent of the local customary rent.
