What happened to Timur Ivanov?

Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was detained on charges of taking a bribe. Independent media have previously written about Ivanov’s accusations of corruption regarding his activities at construction sites in Mariupol.

According to the official report from the Investigative Committee, Ivanov is charged with receiving a large bribe, which corresponds to Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

Last year, an extensive investigation was published focusing on the Deputy Minister of Defense. As a result, it became known that construction projects in Mariupol are managed by the private company Olimpsitistroy, although officially they are carried out by the state-owned Military Construction Company.

A source close to Ivanov told the VChK-OGPU channel about his connections with two Defense Ministry contractors: Olimpsitistroy and Zapsibgazprom. Calculations by journalists showed that due to military coefficients, the cost of construction in Mariupol may exceed the budget by 3-4 times, which simplifies theft schemes.

A former military construction worker confirmed the introduction of “homework” by Ivanov for contractors, which actually meant bribes (kickbacks).

His arrest was a serious blow to Defense Minister Shoigu, who supported him. It is suspected that Ivanov could pay for publications glorifying Shoigu.

Z-military officers openly rejoice at the detention of Sergei Shoigu’s deputy.

Ivanov’s detention is based on witness testimony and operational data, and the investigation plans to request an arrest.

Ivanov is responsible for the construction of Ministry of Defense facilities, including the Patriot Park and the Temple of the Armed Forces, as well as the restoration of Mariupol. At the same time, Timur Ivanov, despite the ban on travel to NATO countries, celebrated his birthday on the Cote d’Azur in France.

The investigation intends to achieve Ivanov’s arrest on charges of receiving a large bribe, for which he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Sanctions, family in Europe and holidays on the Cote d’Azur

Since the introduction of sanctions against Ivanov on March 15, 2022 by the United States, the European Union, Great Britain and Canada, his wife has been actively visiting EU countries, especially spending a lot of time at resorts, for example, in Courchevel, as opposed to staying in Russia. Ivanov’s son from his first marriage left to study in England a few days before mobilization. The daughter permanently resides in France. The wife, Svetlana Ivanova (formerly Zakharova / Maniovich), has Israeli citizenship and organized a fictitious divorce in 2022, while continuing to demonstrate her husband’s high income on social networks.

Timur Ivanov is one of the most pro-Western officials in the Russian government. Even as deputy defense minister and with limited access to information due to the first form of secrecy prohibiting travel to NATO countries, he celebrated his birthday on the French Riviera in August 2016. Interestingly, during his frequent trips, Ivanov stayed at the 5-star hotel Le Club de Cavaliere & Spa, which belongs to Gennady Timchenko’s wife, Elena (after the investigation began, the hotel was seized by the French authorities).
