A popular barbecue joint in Louisville revealed on Wednesday that it will be shutting down after a decade of operation.
FDKY Barbecue has tentatively set its final day of operation for April 27th, though this may change if their stock runs out earlier.
In a Facebook announcement, the owners expressed gratitude to their dedicated patrons and cited various challenges leading to their sudden closure.
Bruce Loeffler, in a Facebook post, attributed the closure to the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, economic pressures, and a shortage of workforce, making profitability elusive.
Over the years, FDKY Barbecue underwent several name changes: it started as “Firehouse BBQ” in 2001, became “Firefresh BBQ” in 2006, “Bruce’s Smokehouse” in 2007, “Crabby Jake’s Fish House & Barbecue” in 2011, and eventually settled as FDKY (Fire Departments of Kentucky) Barbecue from 2013 onward.
Despite a desire to revert to their original name, Firehouse BBQ, the owners cited trademark conflicts with Firehouse Subs as a hindrance.
Loeffler concluded his statement with a heartfelt plea to support local businesses, emphasizing their reliance on community patronage.
In addition to their closure announcement, FDKY Barbecue disclosed plans to sell off their remaining BBQ rubs and marinades.
The Facebook post conveyed deep appreciation for the support over the past decade, acknowledging the pivotal role customers played in their journey.
