Bats are peculiar creatures with habits that people find incredibly strange. For example, they sometimes suck blood, sleep upside down or stay up all night. We define bats as supernatural, associating them with vampires and even superheroes. With their talent for echolocation, this is no surprise. This ability to see with their ears is perhaps what bats are best known for, as is their supposed blindness, which (it is said) makes echolocation necessary for finding and feeding on fruit, insects, and other small animals. But what if the most common theory you’ve always been told about bats is wrong?

What if being blind as a bat just means seeing perfectly? Contrary to popular belief, bats are generally not blind at all and are actually believed to have sharper vision than most humans. The misconception that bats are blind is due to their nocturnal nature and enhanced hearing abilities. Because they hunt primarily at night, when lighting conditions are of course very dark, bats rely on echolocation to pinpoint the exact location of prey.

However, this ability does not require and is not related to blindness. Instead, the genetic mutations that evolved the ability to echolocate in bats probably arose because they helped the animals in the dark. Bats’ eyes, far from useless, are adapted to low-light conditions to better aid in finding prey, and are enhanced by the superpower of their hearing. Now, being blind as a bat doesn’t sound so bad anymore, does it?
