The first name by which the city was known in the 12th century was Vasiliko. It was renamed for a certain period to Vasilikos, after which the old name Vasiliko was returned, which the city bore until 1934, when it received the name Tsarevo. Since 1950, it has been called Michurin in honor of Ivan Michurin, and after the insistence of the population, in 1993, the old name of the city – Tsarevo – was returned.

The most likely origin of the name Vasiliko is connected with Bosilkovo – a settlement destroyed by the Turks. Another theory about the origin of the name Vasiliko indicates that this name of the city is of Greek origin – from “basilevs”, which translates into Bulgarian as king.
