STRASBOURG. The European Parliament has hammered out legislation to ensure that the bins are not filled with packaging. In 2021, every European left behind 189 kilos of packaging waste.
The legal package contains targets on how much packaging waste must be reduced, and rules that all packaging (except for certain materials, such as ceramics, cork and textiles) must be able to be recycled.
From 1 January 2030, certain single-use plastic packaging, for example around unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables, is prohibited for food and drink that is filled in packaging in cafes and restaurants as well as small packages for sauces and flavorings. Even very thin plastic bags are prohibited.
Among the Swedish parliamentarians, S, V, MP and L voted for, while SD and C voted no. C justifies his refusal by saying that the rules are far too detailed, and they become difficult to introduce and follow. M and KD put down their votes. The rules must also be formally approved by the Council of Ministers, which has provisionally given the green light.
