The amount of collectibles found in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is staggering, with one of the most valuable items dropping from creatures known as Bubbulfrogs. These are blue frogs that players will stumble upon when exploring the many caves of Hyrule. Bubbulfrogs appear all throughout the game and should be defeated when spotted. Defeating these creatures will drop a precious item called Bubbul Gems. Link will find an abundance of Bubbulfrogs on his journey and this currency is exchanged for some exclusive gear.

Bubbul Gems are a brand-new currency introduced in Tears of the Kingdom and are the only way of obtaining monster masks. For those that have not played Breath of the Wild, these masks depict various monsters found throughout Hyrule, with the most iconic being the Bokoblin Mask. They allow Link to move around without alerting the specific monsters. This is fantastic for sneaking up on foes and getting a surprise attack on a camp. Bubbul Gems are also traded for rare monster parts, perfect for upgrading weapons or brewing a powerful elixir in Tears of the Kingdom. This currency can be exchanged with a special vendor named Koltin.

Zelda TOTK Koltin Starting Quest

While players may stumble across Bubbulfrogs on their own, they will be introduced to both the creatures and Bubbul Gems through Koltin and his brother Kilton. They can be found near Pico Pond and the Woodland Stable. This is located to the northeast of Lookout Landing. Speaking to both Koltin and Kilton will start the quest “The Hunt for Bubbul Gems.” Players must enter the nearby cave and collect the Bubbul Gem by defeating the Bubbulfrog.

Once retrieved, the blue gem can be given to Koltin, who proceeds to eat the collectible in hopes of becoming a Satori. This glowing blue horse-like creature was originally featured in Breath of the Wild to honor the passing of Nintendo CEO, Satoru Iwata. Once Koltin finishes eating, “The Hunt of Bubbul Gems” will complete, and “The Search for Koltin” will immediately start.

After he and his brother leave, Koltin will start flying all over Hyrule in his hot air balloon. The spot he appears is random, but luckily players can speak to Kilton and find out where he will be landing. Kilton is located in the Akkala Highlands, in Tears of the Kindom‘s Tarrey Town.

Koltin only appears at night, after 9 pm. Bring them Bubbul Gems at that time to exchange for valuable rewards.

How To Find Bubbulfrogs And Bubbul Gems

Zelda TOTK Bubbulfrog Locations Map

As shown in the image above, Bubbulfrogs are scattered throughout Hyrule. These creatures can only be encountered in caves or other enclosed areas. Luckily, they glow blue and are always found hanging on the walls. Bubbulfrogs do not have much health and are most efficiently taken down with a bow.

When exploring a cave for the first time, players should keep an eye out for a chance to collect another Bubbul Gem. Some cave entrances may be hidden from view or blocked off by rocks. Fortunately, Nintendo has graced players with two ways of finding the locations of Bubbulfrogs.

The first way of locating a cave is by spotting a Blupee, which are glowing blue rabbit-like creatures that leave Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom behind if shot with an arrow. Either when hit or frightened, a Blupee will lead players to a cave entrance. These creatures can be rather hard to see from far away, especially during the daytime. The second method for finding a cave is to locate a large Sakura, or Cherry Blossom, tree.

Sometimes, a Gerudo woman will be relaxing underneath and she will inform players that a Satori can be called if a piece of fruit is offered in the bowl at the base of the tree. Doing so will have the Satori highlight the surrounding caves temporarily in blue light. While not permanent, this makes finding a Blupee much easier.

There are a total of 146 Bubbul Gems that can be earned, but players only need 45 to earn the initial rewards. After getting all materials and masks, Koltin will ask Link to gather the remaining 101 Bubbul Gems to complete his transformation into a Satori. As one final reward, players are given the Koltin Fabric. This will give a Satori look to the paraglider, a fitting prize for a quest centered around this mystical creature in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
