18-year-old swimmer dies after June 1 accident at Little Rock’s Southwest Community Center, pool remains closed

The city of Little Rock sends word that a young man who had to be rescued from the Southwest Community Center pool Thursday has died of his injuries.

LITTLE ROCK – The City of Little Rock is saddened to report that the 18-year-old young man involved in the June 1st incident at the Southwest Community Center pool has succumbed to his injuries. Mayor Scott has visited with the young man’s family to offer prayers and support. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred yesterday at Southwest Community Center. I have prayed with the young man’s parents, and their family will remain in my prayers during this extremely difficult time,” Mayor Scott said.

The City also continues to offer support for the city staff on scene in the aftermath of this tragic incident.

Little Rock Police has initiated a death investigation, per protocol, to ascertain all information related to the incident. Accordingly, no further details are available at this time.

Southwest Community Center will reopen to the public on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 8:00 am. The pool will remain closed until further notice. Please visit the Little Rock Parks and Recreation social media pages for further updates.
