Fire at First Congregational Church of Spencer, roof collapses, police say

The First Congregational Church of Spencer was engulfed in flames Friday afternoon, prompting nearby residents to evacuate due to a roof collapse, Massachusetts State Police said.

Route 9 has also been shut down in both directions to allow for firefighters’ operations, police stated.

Just before 3 p.m. on June 2, the Spencer Fire Department and neighboring fire departments responded to a significant fire at the First Congregational Church at 207 Main St. in the town, police said.

The building quickly became consumed with fire and its roof collapsed, police said.

Nearby residents of the church were ordered to evacuate as a precaution, police said. The church is situated in a neighborhood area with homes across the street, according to Google Maps.
