Frost Science sifts candidates for CEO post

The search for the next Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science CEO continues to move forward with what is reported to be a high quality of applicants.

The Frost Science Board of Trustees recognizes that finding the right CEO to lead Frost Science is of paramount importance, said Cesar L. Alvarez, Frost Science’s chairman.

“The search for a new CEO is ongoing, and we’ve been pleased with the quality of applicants received to date,” he said. “The committee continues to evaluate candidates who have been identified as potentially a good fit for the position.”

The board of trustees appointed a search committee comprised of trustees and museum stakeholders to lead the search and nomination process. The committee says it is committed to finding the right candidate who will lead Frost Science. Once a final candidate has been selected, the full board of trustees will be a part of the final decision.

Frank Steslow stepped down as president and CEO in early March. He now is CEO of the Summer Science Program, an independent non-profit organization. He gave the museum about three months’ notice, during which he helped prepare for the transition. He remains available for occasional consultation.

Mr. Steslow joined the museum in 2007 as chief operating officer. In 2016, he was named CEO and president. He oversaw the construction and development of the new Frost Science campus, which opened in May 2017 at 1101 Biscayne Blvd. in downtown Miami.

Since opening, the museum has welcomed over 3.1 million visitors and has become one of South Florida’s most popular cultural organizations, enjoying record attendance levels.

“Frost Science is fortunate to have a strong leadership team in place that has continued to manage the museum’s daily operations during this transitional period,” Mr. Alvarez added. “Upon Mr. Steslow’s departure, the board of trustees also appointed COO Trevor Powers and VP of Science Education Dr. Doug Roberts as interim Co-CEOs until a permanent CEO is appointed.”
