In recent years, various popular protests have emerged in Chinese society, covering a wide range of areas. The groups initiating protest movements are not only farmers, but also civil servants, workers, investors, owners, students, merchants, teachers, retirees, etc.

According to Radio Free Asia, the US non-profit organization “Freedom House” released a report on the status of dissent monitoring in China in the fourth quarter of last year. It pointed out that in the fourth quarter of 2023, China Dissent Monitoring (CDM) recorded 952 protest incidents, which was higher than the previous two quarters respectively. Increases of 30% and 50% indicate the increasing number of protests in China.

Among them, labor (61%) and housing (17%) protests were the most frequent, and 22% involved issues such as the environment, school safety, fraud, land disputes and forced demolitions, and religious freedom. About 18% (172 incidents) occurred in Guangdong Province, followed by Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi and Sichuan. Since June 2022, CDM has collected a total of 4,638 protest incidents.
