All of these are examples of victim blaming. something that people in Croatia know all too well, and something that is being fought against on this very day: denim. You may already know the story about the young Italian woman who was raped by a driving instructor, but the court acquitted him because he was wearing tight jeans. Which he couldn’t take off, so it’s not rape. In 1992, this caused a revolt by Italian women, and that’s why the last Wednesday in April is marked as Denim Day all over the world, that’s why today politicians and actresses and the whole of Instagram wear jeans. It doesn’t matter if you weren’t wearing denim. It is much more important to know that neither jeans nor anything else can be an alibi for sexual violence. And the victim can never be blamed.
