WHO IS ŞEVKET ÇORUH?
Şevket Çoruh was born on June 30, 1973 in Istanbul. He is the only child of a family from Artvin, whose father’s side migrated from Ardanuç’s Anaçlı village to Istanbul at the end of the ’93 War and settled in the Muratlı village, which is currently under the waters of the Ömerli Dam. His mother’s side is from Sapanca and is of Georgian and Laz origin. His mother is a tailor and his father is a minibus driver.
Çoruh, who completed his primary and secondary education at Taşktep Primary School in Üsküdar, lived in Maltepe from the age of 14 to 24. He completed his high school education at Kartal Anatolian High School. After graduating from high school, she studied theater at Müjdat Gezen Art Center.
He has taken part in various theater plays since 1989. He made a name for himself with his role as “Kokoreççi” in an advertisement for an internet company. In 1997, he prepared and presented the program “We Made a joke” together with Sinem Üretimmen. He staged the comedy called Caveman in Turkey, which entered the record books as the longest one-man play staged in Broadway history.
He played in the TV series Arka Sokaklar from 2006 to 2022. He became known for his role as Commissioner Mesut Güneri in the TV series and for his acting in film series such as Eğreti Gelin, Usta films and İnşaat and Çakallarla Dans.
On April 3, 2017, Çoruh used his own financial savings to open the theater he named Baba Sahne in Kadıköy, Istanbul. At the opening of the theater, Müjdat Gezen handed over to Çoruh the fez of İsmail Dümbüllü, which is considered the symbol of greatness in Turkish theater and was handed over to him by Münir Özkul. He was deemed worthy of the Best Actor Award in the Comedy/Musical category at the Theater Magazine Emek and Achievement Awards 2018, together with his co-star Murat Akkoyunlu, in the Hamlet adaptation called “Bir Baba Hamlet” staged at Baba Sahne in 2017; 22nd Afife Jale Awards. He received the Haldun Dormen Special Award.
Actor Rasim Öztekin announced in a statement on 27 August 2020 that he would hand over his turban, representing Dümbüllü’s middle play, to Çoruh, and his turban was transferred to Çoruh with a special handover ceremony held at Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Theater on 20 September 2020, organized by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. has been transferred to. Thus, these two symbols of Traditional Turkish Theater were brought together in one person for the third time after many years.
