The hope was that the fire would be out during Wednesday morning. But the rescue service will be on site for at least one more day, Danish media now reports.

– We have moved forward our forecast. Our hope yesterday was that we would be here today. Our hope now is that we will be here at least until tomorrow morning, says Tim Ole Simonsen, operations manager at the Copenhagen rescue service, on Wednesday morning to Ritzau .

It has been more difficult than expected to get to the locations to best deal with the fire. That’s why they simply haven’t been able to work at the pace they had planned for.

In the meantime, at least half the building so far burned down. All that remains of the worst affected parts is the outer mortar, which the firefighters are now fighting to save as best they can.

In parallel with the extinguishing work, efforts are being made to ensure that the building’s facade does not collapse and spill out onto the street. Large roadblocks around Børsen will continue to affect traffic in the area during Wednesday, Danish TV2 reports.

The fire in the historically important 17th-century building started on Tuesday morning in a part where renovation work was underway. Terrified Copenhageners gathered to watch as the distinctive scepter depicting entwined dragon tails crashed to the ground.

The cause of the fire is still unclear.
