The US can put pressure on China and warn about the end of normal relations and trade.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to China is a strategy to deter Beijing from helping the Russian Federation in its war against Ukraine.
Alexander Kraev, an expert at the Foreign Policy Council “Ukrainian Prism”, said this on air at the information marathon. He considers the way Blinken was received to be an eloquent gesture from the Chinese side. “They expect a lot from the Secretary of State’s visit in the context of trade, because it is the Americans who are now putting China on hold because of the Russian Federation in terms of trade. And they expect a lot in the context of Taiwan. For them, the ideal option is to maintain the status quo, but the Americans are ready to give Taiwan has more weapons, and the Chinese, let’s say, want to bargain with them about it,” Kraev said.
In his opinion, the Chinese are betting more on these negotiations than the Americans.
“For the Americans, the key goal is to understand China’s position regarding the peace negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. To understand what to do with the Chinese so that they do not push Russia into these negotiations as actively as they do. And most importantly, what to do with the Chinese peace formula – with the four points that they proposed,” the expert noted.
According to Kraev, the Americans will not be able to convince China, but they are trying to understand its position.
“Now China clearly says that there are two systems: Chinese and American. And they cannot converge. They can only coexist. And therefore the position of the Americans is that we will not waste time trying to change China’s opinion. We will find out “what they really think, we will see the real picture, we will analyze it, and then we will put the Chinese in such a geopolitical position that they cannot implement their own strategy,” Kraev emphasized.
He noted that this is exactly what happened when the Americans did not give China the opportunity to directly help the Russians.
“And the Chinese had to dismantle their weapons or their dual-use goods into some pieces, try to go through third countries. Their companies went bankrupt, their normal relations with the Russian Federation broke down. That is, America has experience in literally containing China by force. Therefore , it will not be about persuasion. It will be about developing a new strategy of deterrence by force,” Kraev said.
According to him, the Americans can warn China that trade and normal relations between Washington and Beijing may end due to Beijing’s position on supporting Russia.
