Increasing 4G coverage in Cuba, “a priority for ETECSA”

World news

MIAMI, United States. — While 5G technology spreads throughout a large part of the world, making coverage on other frequencies obsolete, the Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) continues to work to increase 4G coverage on the Island.

A note from the official newspaper Granmaofficial organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), points out that “the growth strategy of 4G coverage in services to the population is a priority for ETECSA”, the only company of its kind in the Caribbean country.

The state media collected statements from Adolfo Martínez Segura, vice president of Strategy and Business of the entity, who assured that “to achieve this goal, the process of developing the access network for 4G technology is continuing in locations where, currently, only enjoy services in 2G/3G”.

The executive explained that this “represents an important challenge considering the financial situation of the nation and the high costs in the international market to acquire these technological infrastructures.”

At present, alternatives are deployed in Cuba, among which the expansion of the use of new frequencies such as 700 megahertz (mhz), 900 mhz and 2,100 mhz stands out.

In the case of the 700 MHz frequency — which due to its characteristics covers the longest range in the national territory — Martínez Segura said that “it is ideal for areas of low population density” and that it has already been successfully installed in places in Pinar del Río. , Artemisa and the Isla de la Juventud, while “it continues its expansion to towns in the Mayabeque province.”

ETECSA’s Vice President of Strategy and Business explained that the increase in 4G coverage in Cuba will be closely linked to the transition to digital television, since this “frees up this frequency band for mobile phone use.”
