It’s already certain – Russian nuclear weapons will be in Belarus. Moscow and Minsk signed an agreement

World news

Russian nuclear weapons will be deployed on the territory of Belarus. On Thursday, the agreement was signed by the ministers of national defense of the countries. Although it will be stored in a Belarusian shelter, control over it will remain in the hands of Moscow.

As part of the agreement, the Iskander-M tactical and operational missile system and the S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems are to be delivered to Belarus. What’s more Russia was also supposed to modernize Belarusian tactical Su-25s so that they could carry nuclear weapons.

Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin will say that this step is “a response to the aggressive policy of hostile states“. His Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, in turn, emphasized that Russia will not hand over weapons to Belarus, but will only place them there. Full control over it will still belong to Moscow.

According to Vladimir Putin’s earlier statements, warehouses for storing nuclear weapons in Belarus are to be built by June 1.

However, shortly after the announcement of this decision, American analysts from the Institute of War Studies (ISW) assessed that the actions had been planned before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In their report, they stated that Moscow is equipped with weapons that can hit targets within range of those deployed in Belarus. According to them, the most likely goal of this movement was to make Minsk even more dependent on the Kremlin.
