Russia bombed Odessa. “Night Monster Attack”. Damaged second largest church in Ukraine

World news

The war in Ukraine brings further losses. A Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Odessa severely damaged a historic Orthodox church. Many people were injured, including children. This is not the first time Russia has attacked this city.

The war in Ukraine claims more victims. According to Reuters, a Russian air strike on the Ukrainian city of Odessa from Saturday to Sunday, July 23, killed one person and injured 19 people, including four children. In addition, the Orthodox church was seriously damaged. “Another night monster attack,” Oleh Kiper, governor of Odessa Oblast in southern Ukraine, said on his social media.

Odessa. The Russian attack destroyed the Orthodox church, which is the second largest in Ukraine

The Odessa military administration reported that the Russian attacks led to serious damage to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky church. From under the rubble, the Kasperowska Icon of the Mother of God, who is the patron saint of Odessa, was excavated. The Transfiguration Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Odessa. The church is the second largest in Ukraine and was built in 1794. The Soviets demolished it in 1936, but it underwent reconstruction in 2000-2010. Materials showing the scale of the damage appeared on social media.

The Ukrainian military said that Russia attacked Odessa with Kalibr, X-22, Iskander-M, Iskander-K and Onyx supersonic missiles. Some of the missiles were destroyed by air defense forces. The rest caused the destruction of port infrastructure and at least six residential buildings. The attack also damaged cars, roofs and windows.

War in Ukraine. Russia attacked Odessa not for the first time

Over the past week, Russia has bombed Odessa and Ukrainian food export facilities almost every day. The action is caused by the Kremlin’s withdrawal from the agreement on the sea corridor, which enabled the safe transport of Ukrainian grain. The agreement was brokered by the United Nations.

These are not the first losses Odessa has suffered in the war in Ukraine. As we reported, in May there was a massive attack that led to the burning of a food warehouse in Odessa. Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman for the military administration in Odessa, said at the time that Russian missiles fell on a food warehouse and on the Black Sea coast, which led to a fire.
