That annoys people in the Hanseatic city

Garbage, parking problems, inconsideration: not everything is rosy in Hamburg. What particularly annoys the local people.

Anyone who talks about Hamburg is often full of praise: the harbor, the Alster and the Reeperbahn make the city worth living in for many. But a street survey shows that people don’t like everything about the Hanseatic city.

Silke Wirch, for example, is annoyed by the many construction sites in the city. “Who’s actually planning this? It feels like it’s one construction site after another,” says the 59-year-old frustrated. Added to this is the hassle of dog runs in parks. In her opinion, many dog owners confuse this with a dog toilet, such as Am Baumwall. “There you are, standing in the poop and trying to play with your dog.”

Sina Kleuter criticizes the rail connection to rural areas and the lack of parking spaces in the city. Another problem for them is the situation at the main train station with the drug advice center “Drob Inn”. “It creates a feeling of danger and discomfort,” says the 19-year-old.

Hamburgers are annoyed by the weather

The beggars in the subways and the situation on Jungfernstieg also make Hendrik Faden feel uneasy. The youth gangs there, who hang out on the Alster when the weather is good, bother him. The 29-year-old is also bothered by the fact that many playgrounds are in poor condition. And that there are none in the city center. “Parking spaces would have to be converted into green spaces and playgrounds,” says the father of a small child. The bad weather in the Hanseatic city also annoys him. “Hamburg on Mallorca would be perfect,” he says.

The married couple Annegret and Friedhold Ohlendorf, who have lived in Hamburg for more than 35 years, also have points of criticism. “Some corners of this city are very dirty,” says Annegret Ohlendorf. This is particularly the case outside the city center; many people simply throw their garbage on the street. In Farmsen-Berne, where she lives, there is a private road, “it’s actually a garbage road,” said the senior citizen.

Lots of homeless people: “Hamburg should do a lot more about that”

The couple is also annoyed by the recklessness of the e-scooter drivers. Friedhold Ohlendorf says: “They drive in the middle of the sidewalks and whiz past you on the right and left. As a pedestrian you really have to be careful.”

But there are also many positive voices about Hamburg: “We like everything here,” say Ilse Sturm from the Altes Land and Monika Böckel from Buxtehude. The two women are visiting and are currently strolling through the city. They love the shopping opportunities, the cafés and restaurants, and the Alster. “For me, Hamburg is, along with London, the most beautiful city in the world,” says Sturm. But she also criticizes the fact that there are so many homeless people in the city. “Hamburg would have to do a lot more about this.”
