Twitter blocked the Law and Justice spot from Auschwitz. It’s about copyright

World news

The Law and Justice spot, which used shots from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, is no longer available on Twitter. Instead, the official account of the ruling party displays information that the owner of the rights to one of the frames reported copyright. The British BBC station is responsible for the claims.

The several-second clip was published on May 31 on the official social profile of Law and Justice. United Right politicians soon began sharing it on their websites.

Auschwitz in the PiS spot

The recording included an online entry by publicist Tomasz Lis, who wrote in the already deleted tweet: “There will be a chamber for Duda and Kaczor.” It was preceded by the frames of the former German concentration camp Auschwitz. The party spot reminded that “more than a million people were murdered in Auschwitz” and “six million Poles were murdered during the war”.

On Wednesday, the spot disappeared from Twitter. “These media have been blocked due to a copyright owner’s report,” reads the caption in place of the 14-second spot.

The BBC informed “Gazeta Wyborcza” about the use of their material

“Gazeta Wyborcza” explains that its editors sent a request to the BBC press office whether the station allowed the use of its clips in the spot. In a statement sent to “GW”, the British public broadcaster replied that it did not express such consent.

“We have reported this to Twitter for copyright infringement and have asked for it to be removed.” In the spot, PiS used shots from a BBC film from eight years ago. They are in the first and seventh second of the clip.

Moskal: According to Polish law, it is allowed to quote works to a reasonable extent

The spot also uses drone shots taken in 2018 by Wiktor Woźniak. – They were simply taken away – said the man in an interview with polsatnews.pl. About the use of photos without the consent of their author Interia asked the director of the PiS Presidential Office, Michał Moskal.

– According to Polish law, it is allowed to quote works to a reasonable extent. In the case of the video material, two fragments of drone shots of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum – one 3-second and the other 4-second, were supplemented with historical information (over a million people were murdered in the extermination camp; 6 million Poles died during the war) and were used in as part of a critical analysis of the scandalous and hateful entry of Mr. Tomasz Lis – argued Moskal.
