Loan for a dead senior citizen
Employees at a bank in the city of Rio de Janeiro called emergency services on Tuesday because a woman brought a man in a wheelchair and asked for a loan on his behalf.
Emergency responders found the man dead, police said in a statement.
She tried to deceive them
Police in Bangu district, western Rio, charged the woman with attempted theft by deception and desecration of a corpse. Investigators are looking into how and when the man died.
Brazilian media reported that the 68-year-old man’s niece tried to get a loan of 17,000 Brazilian reals (about 3,055 euros) on his behalf.
“She was trying to make it look like a man was signing documents,” local chief of investigators Fábio Luiz told the G1 news site. “But he was already dead when she went into the bank with him,” he added.
The woman’s lawyer denied the allegations.
