Even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment, summer is already in the starting blocks in Germany. By May Day next week, the nation’s parks are likely to be packed with dozens of sunbathers.

As soon as the sun shines again, many people look forward to a picnic with a colorful mix of snacks in addition to the traditional barbecue. This is where consumers currently have to be careful.

Sunflower seeds at Aldi contaminated with salmonella

In a product recall, the discounter giant Aldi warns of a risk in its own organic range.

  • Specifically, it’s about that 650 gram pack of “Gut Organic Sunflower Seeds” from the manufacturer Estyria Naturprodukte GmbH.
  • Due to a potential health hazard, according to a company press release all products with batch number 23007616/1 with a best-before date of March 2025 recalled as a precaution.
  • The product was therefore sold in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Thuringia and Saarland.

“Since a health risk cannot be ruled out, customers should definitely pay attention to the recall and not consume the affected product,” it says. During a routine examination, traces of salmonella were found in the affected batch.

Salmonella causes typical food poisoning in the human body. The inflammation caused in the intestines usually leads to diarrhea and severe headaches and abdominal pain.

Manufacturers with an urgent appeal to consumers

Anyone who has already purchased a product from the affected batch can return it to all Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd branches. Even without the corresponding receipt, all consumers will be refunded the full purchase price on site.

Estyria Naturprodukte GmbH urges consumers to pay attention to the recall. An infection can have serious consequences, especially for people with an immune deficiency.

“The company deeply regrets the incident and apologizes to all customers for the inconvenience caused,” those responsible explained in the press release. However, other items from the supplier are not affected by the risk of salmonella.

The number of annual product recalls in Germany has been rising continuously for years. Last year alone, the Federal Office of Consumer Protection published a total of 384 official product recalls.

The reason for the increase is likely to be stricter control requirements for food manufacturers. It’s all the more worthwhile – especially before making a big purchase for a picnic together – to take a regular look at the lebensmittelwarning.de portal.
