Climate activists face punishment after paint attack on Brandenburg Gate World news

Around seven months after the paint attack on the Brandenburg Gate, three climate activists were each given suspended sentences of eight months. The Tiergarten district court found the members of the Last Generation climate group guilty on Tuesday of causing damage to property that was harmful to the public. It followed the public prosecutor’s request. The defense had pleaded for acquittal.

For climate activists, the color attack on the Brandenburg Gate was “appropriate protest”

The 22, 28 and 64 old defendants had previously confessed to having spray-painted the Berlin landmark on September 17, 2023. In view of the climate catastrophe, the action was an “appropriate and necessary protest”.

The court disagreed with this stance. It was not a “suitable or appropriate protest”. The climate demonstrators accepted that the Brandenburg Gate would be damaged. In its verdict, the court assumed damages of around 110,000 euros.
