Klaus Iohannis leaves for a three-day official visit to South Korea

President Klaus Iohannis will go on an official three-day visit to the Republic of Korea on Monday, at the invitation of his counterpart, Yoon Suk Yeol, informs the Presidential Administration.

„The intensification of political-diplomatic contacts between the two states, the positive trend of bilateral trade, as well as the multitude of fields in which there is potential and mutual interest for collaboration represent the main premises that substantiate the decision to strengthen the Strategic Partnership between Romania nia and the Republic of Korea, on the occasion of the official visit to Seoul, the first at the level of a head of state in the last 16 years, the same source states.

In this context, the “Joint Declaration regarding the consolidation of the Romania-Republic of Korea Strategic Partnership” will be adopted at the highest level, a document that will establish the main directions of cooperation targeted by both sides for the next 10 years.

The visit to South Korea will begin on Monday, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Cemetery in Seoul and an informative tour of Panmunjom (Joint Security Area) in the Demilitarized Zone.

On March, Klaus Iohannis will be received by his counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol. The political consultations between the two heads of state will focus on issues related to the strengthening of the Strategic Partnership, political-diplomatic and defense cooperation, the main regional and global challenges, as well as the promotion of sectoral areas, with an emphasis on the intensification of trade and investments in the field of green and nuclear energy, new technologies, IT&C, environment and climate change management, in infrastructure, health, education or other new fields. It will also be highlighted the special link that inter-human and cultural exchanges, which have enjoyed a remarkable growth in recent years, represent for the two states.

In the presence of the President of Romania and the President of the Republic of Korea, a series of relevant documents will be signed for the strengthening of the bilateral relationship, regarding: defense, nuclear energy, investments and foreign trade, cooperation in emergency situations and disaster management, cooperation in the fields of culture, mass media, youth and sports.

The official delegation accompanying the President of Romania to Seoul also includes members of the Romanian Government – the Minister of National Defense, Angel Tâlvăr, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminișa Odobescu , the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, and the Secretary of State, Head of the Department for Emergency Situations, Raed Arafat.

During the official visit to the Republic of Korea, the President of Romania will have a meeting with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, an opportunity to point out the main objectives of the bilateral economic relationship and to evaluate the results of the 10th Joint Committee for Industrial Cooperation (Seoul, March 25, 2024).

On Wednesday, President Klaus Iohannis will visit the Doosan Enerbility Production Complex, Changwon, (Busan), where he will have a series of discussions with the main driving factors regarding the new challenges and opportunities in the field of renewable energy and of small modular reactors (SMRs).

On the occasion of the official visit to the Republic of Korea, the President of Romania will have meetings with representatives of the Romanian community and the business environment and will visit the exhibition of traditional Romanian art not “Insight Romania”.

The Republic of Korea is the first country in the Asia-Pacific region with which Romania raised relations to the level of Strategic Partnership, signed in 2008.
