– This idea is very serious, I would have to know all the circumstances that prompted the president to make this declaration – said Donald Tusk, responding to the president’s words about nuclear weapons in Poland. Radosław Sikorski reminded Andrzej Duda that security issues are the competence of the Council of Ministers.

Andrzej Duda said in an interview for “Fakt” that Poland is ready to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory as part of the NATO program, if such were the allies’ decision. The head of government reacted to these words. – I am looking forward to meeting the president to discuss this matter and understand his intentions. This case very clearly concerns Polish security. I care very much that Poland is safe and well armed, said Donald Tusk.

The head of the Polish government emphasized that he cared about Poland’s security, but any initiatives must be well prepared by the people responsible for them. – This idea is very serious, I would have to know all the circumstances that prompted the president to make this declaration – said Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

During a press conference in Canada, the president assured that he would meet the prime minister on this matter. – Of course I will meet the Prime Minister. It is obvious to me that we cooperate with each other in matters relating to security policy and in any matter where there is a need, Duda said.

Andrzej Duda: This is not a new issue. We have talked about this many times

– So far, this cooperation has been beneficial for Poland. We were together in the USA, where we met President Joe Biden. Each of us has our own area. The Prime Minister deals with issues related to the European Union, and I deal with issues related to the United Nations. A few days ago, I represented Poland at the UN and NATO, added the president. – This is not a new issue. We have talked about this many times, he emphasized. – No decisions have been made in this matter. Talks are underway. Sometimes our partners also discuss this topic. We are open to this matter as a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, he concluded.

Sikorski: It is the Council of Ministers that conducts Polish foreign policy

The head of Polish diplomacy also reacted to the statement. Sikorski said that any decisions on this matter are the competence of the government. – This would be a very serious decision, all the circumstances of which should be discussed primarily in the Council of Ministers, and so far there has been no such discussion at the Council of Ministers. I would like to remind you that in accordance with Article 146 of the Constitution, it is the Council of Ministers that conducts Polish foreign policy – added the minister.

Duda’s declaration also met with a reaction from the Kremlin. Russia announced that in the event of the deployment of American nuclear weapons on Polish territory, the armed forces would assess the situation. – The military will, of course, analyze the situation if such plans are implemented, and in any case it will do everything necessary, take all necessary retaliatory steps to guarantee our safety, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by RBC.ru.
