Ukrainian advances in the battle for Bakhmut. “Our forces advanced to a distance of 150 to 1,700 meters”

World news

Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian troops advanced in the vicinity of Bakhmut, which was stormed by Russian troops, at a distance of 150 to 1,700 meters, Colonel Serhiy Cherevaty, spokesman for the Eastern Grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said on Thursday.

Although our troops now have no advantage in equipment, ammunition and men, they advance on the flanks during the fighting; managed to walk a distance of 150 to 1700 meters in a day

Czerewaty said.

The spokesman, quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine agency, added that 25 combat clashes took place in the vicinity of Bakhmut, located in the Donetsk region. The Russians launched six air attacks and almost 490 artillery attacks on Ukrainian positions.

Jarosław Wolski argues that the Battle of Bakhmut can be considered a Russian defeat.

In Bakhmut, fights for “dominoes” are underway, i.e. 1 of the last 2 fortified quarters of compact development in which Ukrainians defend themselves. The city is 95% captured by RUS. This is the bloodiest battle in this war for both sides and a real “meat grinder”, i.e. a material war (I don’t like this term BTW). The proper assessment of who won it will be provided only by the analysis of equipment and personal losses. At the operational level, Bakhmut appears as an undisputed defeat for the RUS, despite the tactical “success” in the form of capturing the city. There are many indications that UA’s wing strikes are actually preparing a safe retreat if necessary. We’ll see what happens over the next week

Ukrainian successes on the flanks

The American Institute for War Studies (ISW) reports in its latest report that Russian troops storming Bakhmut in the Donetsk region since August 2022 have advanced, and Ukrainian forces have been successful in attacks around this city. Such assessments result from statements made by representatives of both sides.

Analysts point out that Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, Hanna Malar, said on Wednesday that Russian forces had made some progress in Bakhmut, but the Ukrainian army was advancing in some sections around the city. The spokesman for the Ukrainian forces in the east of the country, Colonel Serhiy Cherevaty, said that they had moved 500 meters in some sections near Bakhmut over the past 24 hours.

In Moscow, the Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian airborne forces had made little progress in Bakhmut, and at the same time confirmed Ukrainian counterattacks to the west and north-west of the city. ISW notes that “one of the well-known Russian war bloggers” suggested that “Russian forces are losing the initiative in the Bakhmut area, despite the limited nature of Ukrainian counterattacks in this area.”

Analysts emphasize that Ukraine’s representatives have admitted in recent days that the topography of the land inhibits Ukrainian counter-offensive operations in the Kherson region in the south of the country. In this context, the Institute of Internal Affairs cites the statement of the spokesperson of the Ukrainian army in the south, Natalia Humeniuk, who assessed that the media should “forget” about Ukraine’s offensive actions in the Kherson direction.

As we can see in the recordings, the Ukrainians are clearing the position near Bakhmut of Russian soldiers.
