People killed since October 7, 2023
A Palestinian man digs into the ground with a pickaxe outside the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza at the weekend. A black bag appears.
The zipper is pulled aside only to find that there is another body, the TV images from the Reuters news agency show.
In the last week, the military leaders claim that 310 dead bodies have been dug up in what they believe to be several mass graves.
Several of the dead are believed to be civilians, among them women and children. The Civil Defense says they believe it will take several days to dig everyone up.
– We are working to identify them, but it is difficult, says Mahmud Basal, who is a spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, to AFP.
It has also been reported about the discovery of the remains of 30 people near the al-Shifa hospital further north, according to Reuters.
Hard battles at the hospital
During the bombing of Khan Younis, hundreds of Palestinians were killed. Many relatives believed that the hospital area in the city was the safest place to bury their loved ones.
But then the intense fighting also came to the Nasser hospital.
Israeli tanks and armored vehicles surrounded the hospital before the soldiers entered and captured it in mid-February.
Now the soldiers are gone, and people have returned to find their graves. A short time later there were reports of mass graves.
In addition to those who were buried before the families fled south, several dead have been found in the graves that bear the mark of torture, according to the Hamas-run health authorities in Gaza.
– We demand an international investigation of what has happened, says Hamas spokesman Ismail al-Thawabta to the same news agency.
UN human rights chief: – Some of them were tied behind
UN human rights chief Volker Türk is “appalled” by the devastation pictured from the Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals.
This was said by his spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, at a press conference at the UN on Tuesday.
Türk, also through Shamdasani, was also horrified by the reports of mass graves, and said that the UN Human Rights Office is investigating whether the information is true.
– We feel the need to sound the alarm, because several corpses have clearly been found, said Shamdasani on behalf of Türk.
– Some of them were tied behind, which of course suggests serious violations of International Law and international humanitarian law.
The UN human rights office is also critical of Israel’s attack on Gaza in recent days, which Türk says has killed mostly women and children.
IDF: – The allegations are unfounded
NRK has been in contact with the Israeli military (IDF) about the information.
– The claim that the IDF has buried Palestinian bodies is unfounded, writes a spokesperson in a text message to NRK.
– During the IDF’s operation in the area around the Nasser hospital, in the context of attempts to find hostages and missing persons, bodies buried by Palestinians were examined.
Israeli media have previously written that this is standard procedure.
– The investigations were carried out carefully and only where our intelligence information suggested that hostages might be present. They were performed in a respectful manner that preserved the dignity of the deceased. The bodies examined that did not belong to Israeli hostages were returned to where they were found.
The IDF further writes that they were forced to fight inside the area of the Nasser hospital because 200 Hamas fighters were stationed there.
Hospital staff and Hamas have denied these claims.
