When two passenger trains collided in the Indian state of Odisha in the east of the country
at least 288 people died, more than a thousand people received various injuries.

The collision occurred on Friday, June 2, in the evening, 220 kilometers from Calcutta. About ten carriages of one train derailed – their wreckage ended up on a nearby track, on which another train was traveling in the opposite direction. As a result of the collision, three of its carriages also derailed, the Indian Railway Ministry said.

Rescuers worked at the scene of the collision throughout the night. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims and relatives of the victims. Saturday has been declared a day of mourning in the state of Odisha.
