He’s devastated. The car of Sherwin Bouterse from Grootebroek burned out completely during a night fishing adventure in the same place. His BMW was parked in the Hertog Albrechtstraat and could not be saved. He suspects arson. “Believe me, a car like that won’t catch fire on its own.”

Sherwin likes to fish near the Hertog Albrechtstraat and was also late on Tuesday evening on the waterfront. “A little further on, towards the provincial road. I heard some banging, but thought of fireworks. Then a man arrived with his dog, whom I had already spoken to the day before. “Isn’t that blue car yours? is on fire,” he said. When I arrived, the fire brigade was already busy. At first I planned to continue fishing, but I just walked home.”

The morning after the fire, local residents are talking to the car. “I didn’t see the car from my house, but I did see the smoke. At first I thought my neighbor’s garage was on fire,” says a woman. “Only later did I see that it was a car.”

Neighbor Michaela had the fright of her life when she was woken up by a neighbor. Her and her friend’s car was saved in the nick of time. “He was standing next to that burnt-out car. But he doesn’t work, has to go to the garage. Fortunately, we were able to push him away just in time. We were lucky.”

It is not the first time that something has happened in the Hertog Albrechtstraat. “I’ve lived there for 16 years now,” says one woman. “At first it was quite restless, then things went well for a while, but lately things have been rumbling here again. murdered woman, just down the road from here, and recently there was a drug raid here in the street. There are also often stolen bicycles in the back of the alley. I’m not necessarily scared, but I’ve become more careful about where I park my car at night.”

Sherwin, meanwhile, hopes that police investigations or nearby cameras will reveal the cause of the fire. He calls on witnesses via a Facebook message to report. “I have my own company, work hard 6 days a week and can therefore drive a nice car. But it doesn’t come naturally to me. I don’t know who could have done this. I have no problems with anyone or anything. I also suspect this is mischief rather than hate. I hope the insurance can do something for me.”
