The Regional Museum of the Peoples of Morelos served as the Palace of the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés who built it to use it as a family residence and headquarters of the Marquesate of the Valley of Oaxaca. It is also counted as one of the first houses in Mexico during the period of viceroyalty.

This complex, made up of the old residence dating from 1535 and by the Cuauhnahuac Regional Museum, It is a flagship architectural work of the city of Cuernavaca.

Over the years it had various uses, It was a prison, seat of the state government, until February 2, 1974 when it became a museum and cultural center.

Inside it houses collections of remains paleontological, archaeological, historical and artistic. It is divided into two rooms, on the ground floor there are various pre-Hispanic figuresand in the upper floor you can enjoy a journey through history from the arrival of the Spanish to the present day next to a mural by Diego Rivera.


The Regional Museum is located at Francisco Leyva No. 100, Colonia Centro, CP 62000, in Cuernavaca, Morelos. Access to the public is through the Juarez Garden and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00.

The director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto reported that starting this Thursday, May 25, the piece will be available at the Cuernavaca museum.
